If our reality were deterministic, the precision of our life plans would be the cornerstone of our existence. But I believe humanity is to our individual stories what the universe is to the elementary particles it is made of.

And yet, following the analogy, I don’t think the collapse of our decisions is entirely random. It is rather our ideals and biases that, in the end, decide where along the wave the particle is found.
If we start out with a model for our life that doesn’t match the results we expected, the answer is not another exact formula. It is to begin shaping our models of thought, to do things that at first didn’t seem coherent, and to treat them as guidelines rather than exact points.
